Why Good Design Matters

You have about 2 seconds to impress someone with your site.  That's it.  It does not matter if you have the coolest application around, design sells the site.  Of course your latest web 2.0 grunge style is not going to appeal to everyone, but if that is your demographic then grunge away.  Coming to CSS gallery sites such as this one gives people ideas for designs that they might not have thought about.

Finding the right designer is the first step to having a great design.  Having to communicate your thoughts, ideas and demographic is key to a successful design.  Many of the designers of the sites you see on CSS Burst have had many years of experience in designing and know the pitfalls of the design experience.

Of course my first paragraph about 2 seconds to impress someone is thrown out the window when you start talking about MySpace.  But I will leave that to another discussion.

Within 2 seconds of landing on your main page I found some 'jumping text' which I found surprising considering this site is all about web design. You can see it too by putting your mouse over the second '>' in the text "Read More >>" in the "CSS Designer Spotlight" box on the right hand side. I was using Firefox 2 FYI :)

Joshua Bloch is a Java library designer. In this talk he teaches how to design good APIs, with many examples of what good and bad APIs look like. Most examples are in java of course, but they are ONLY examples. This talk is about design and the java examples are very easy to understand even if you have never written a line of java code.
